I keep hearing this from people. Not sure why, but perhaps it’s rooted in Preterism or Pre-Wrath theology, but some are out there saying that the battle of Gog-Magog doesn’t occur until after the 1,000-year reign. They use this as a way to say that Ezekiel 38, Isaiah 17, Psalm 83 and the other prophecies are not about to happen. This is misinformation, either accidentally or on purpose, but either way, it’s flat out wrong. Read the scriptures.
The battle of Gog-Magog that is prophesied to occur prior to the arrival of the antichrist is a separate battle. It is a major battle between the King of the North and the King of the South, and they mount an assault against Israel, which is currently living in “unwalled villages.” The battle of Gog-Magog described by Ezekiel in chapter 38-39 occurs during the Great Tribulation.
The reason we know the battle occurs during the Great Tribulation is because after the battle is over, scripture says it takes Israel seven months to bury all the bodies from that war. If this came 1,000 years later, why would they bury the bodies? They will no longer be here to bury anyone. Anyone who dies after the millennium reign are dying the “second death.” Everyone else will be in New Jerusalem, watching God’s final destruction of the wicked on Earth. So, no, the wicked aren’t removed in the Rapture, leaving the saints behind. The planet itself will be destroyed, the wicked still there on earth, then God goes on to create a new one. And so we will be with God (also King Jesus) in heaven forever and ever afterward.
“38 The word of the Lord came to me: 2 “Son of man, set your face toward Gog, of the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech1 and Tubal, and prophesy against him 3 and say, Thus says the Lord God: Behold, I am against you, O Gog, chief prince of Meshech and Tubal. 4 And I will turn you about and put hooks into your jaws, and I will bring you out, and all your army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed in full armor, a great host, all of them with buckler and shield, wielding swords. 5 Persia, Cush, and Put are with them, all of them with shield and helmet; 6 Gomer and all his hordes; Beth-togarmah from the uttermost parts of the north with all his hordes—many peoples are with you.
21 I will summon a sword against Gog on all my mountains, declares the Lord God. Every man’s sword will be against his brother. 22 With pestilence and bloodshed I will enter into judgment with him, and I will rain upon him and his hordes and the many peoples who are with him torrential rains and hailstones, fire and sulfur. 23 So I will show my greatness and my holiness and make myself known in the eyes of many nations. Then they will know that I am the Lord.”
This describes Gog (alliance between Russia, Turkey and Iran) and a few other nations in the region coming against Israel. They lose. In Ezekiel 39, the aftermath of this great battle of Gog-Magog versus Israel is described. Ch. 39 describes the climax, Armageddon. Armageddon is the final battle at the end of the 7 years tribulation, final “week” of Daniel. It takes place in the valley of Har Meggido, and Gog is defeated. Gog and its accompanying nations in the battle are given a place to be buried. Note the portions in bold type – they say that it takes Israel 7 months to bury the dead. 7 years to burn the weapons. Now how can this happen in the days of the Millenium Kingdom, after Jesus has returned and we are given glorified bodies? Because the second Gog-Magog war is a regathering, post-millenium, when Satan is finally defeated.
7 “And my holy name I will make known in the midst of my people Israel, and I will not let my holy name be profaned anymore. And the nations shall know that I am the Lord, the Holy One in Israel. 8 Behold, it is coming and it will be brought about, declares the Lord God. That is the day of which I have spoken.
9 “Then those who dwell in the cities of Israel will go out and make fires of the weapons and burn them, shields and bucklers, bow and arrows, clubs and spears; and they will make fires of them for seven years, 10 so that they will not need to take wood out of the field or cut down any out of the forests, for they will make their fires of the weapons. They will seize the spoil of those who despoiled them, and plunder those who plundered them, declares the Lord God.
11 “On that day I will give to Gog a place for burial in Israel, the Valley of the Travelers, east of the sea. It will block the travelers, for there Gog and all his multitude will be buried. It will be called the Valley of Hamon-gog. 12 For seven months the house of Israel will be burying them, in order to cleanse the land. 13 All the people of the land will bury them, and it will bring them renown on the day that I show my glory, declares the Lord God. 14 They will set apart men to travel through the land regularly and bury those travelers remaining on the face of the land, so as to cleanse it. At the end of seven months they will make their search. 15 And when these travel through the land and anyone sees a human bone, then he shall set up a sign by it, till the buriers have buried it in the Valley of Hamon-gog. 16 (Hamonah is also the name of the city.) Thus shall they cleanse the land.”
So if you or someone you know are teaching/preaching that there is only one battle of Gog-Magog, you’re forgetting Ezekiel 38. We are literally on the doorstep of that particular prophecy coming true, which in turn means that the Great Tribulation can begin literally at any time. The players are already set up in position, the hooks are in the jaws of Gog (the huge oil discovery in the Golan Heights, next to the Syrian border – and Russia wants it). Israel is currently collection of “Villages without walls.” That prophecy of Israel being reformed after the diaspora was fulfilled after WWII, in 1947-48, also known as the “Prophecy of the Dry Bones.”
Don’t believe me? Then google it. Read up Ezekiel 38-39 for yourself, then go back to Revelation. Don’t want to look it up or even read Ezekiel 38? Then click this link here:
An excerpt from Robert J. Morgan’s website on the subject:
” Ezekiel 38:3-6, will include:
Persia –Iran, plus part of Iraq, all of Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, part of Pakistan, and even a corner of China
Cush – Egypt
Put – Libya and North Africa
Gomer – Also part of Turkey
Beth Togarmah – Armenia
The “far north” and “many nations” – The Russian confederation”
Hopefully this clears that up. If it doesn’t, then please explain to me how Israel is burying bodies for 7 months and burning swords, etc., for 7 years? That’s not what Revelation says happens after the second battle of Gog-Magog, post-millennium kingdom in Rev. 20.The Bible does contain mysteries that are written in such a way that they will not be relevant until they are needed and capable of being understood at the proper time. The different references to the two Gog-Magog wars are an example of this. Also another good example is the verse from Revelations talking about reckoning (being able to understand) the number of the beast “is six hundred threescore and six” – it will not be revealed until the proper time and when we are able to recognize it.
References to Gog-Magog leading up to Armageddon, and then regathered again after the millennium, when Satan is released:
“16And they assembled the kings in the place that in Hebrew is called Armageddon.1 7Then the seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air, and a loud voice came from the throne in the temple, saying,” it is done!” [After the great Trib is over]
“Revelation 20:7-10″ When the thousand years are over, Satan will be released from his prison and will go out to deceive the nations in the four corners of the earth. “Gog and Magog” to gather them for battle. In number they are like the sand on the seashore. They marched across the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of God’s people, the city he loves. But fire came down from heaven and devoured them. And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever.”
